Alice and Herman Pruitt Daylilies
Burlington, NC

Alice & Herman Daylilies is a serene country retreat for birds, bees, and people. The Pruitt's have carved out an AHS Display garden of 600+ daylilies and many perennial plants and shrubs. Shady trees surround the Pruitt garden providing a sense of quiet and privacy and shielding visitors and daylilies from the worst of midday sun.

Twin plantings of RUBY SPIDER mark the driveway entrance of the garden with a bold splash of color. Beds of daylilies increasing in size as you walk toward the house line the drive. These beds are highlighted by: LOOK HERE MARY, FORSYTH HOT LIPS, ALICE 'S DAY OFF, and JAN' S TWISTER. All the cultivars are well labeled and the labels are easy to see.

A faux cobblestone patio separates the driveway beds from the large circle of daylilies behind the house. The Pruitt's are fans of Region 15 hybridizers, so you will see many cultivars by John Shooter, Faye Shooter, Elizabeth Shooter, Charles Douglas and many others in the circle bed. This circular bed, 4 rows wide, encloses a grassy center 150 feet across which is graced with two island beds. The larger island is Alice Pruitt's Bible bed - all the daylilies having scriptural style names such as: CELEBRATION OF ANGELS, SUNDAY MORNING, and PROMOTED TO GLORY. The smaller island contains some recent cultivars by the guest speakers including MEPHISTO WALTZ by Schwartz and JOHN COLTRANE by C. Hanson. Bordering the Pruitt's deck, near the big circle bed, is a smaller bed, which features primarily double daylilies.

Integrated into the gardens you will find a collection of hosta, a small waterfall surrounded by many different species of fern, and garden art accents.

Herman Pruitt is an AHS Garden Judge and an AHS Junior Exhibition Judge.
