Cyberlily Gardens - home of Rebecca Board
Chapel Hill, NC

Cyberlily Gardens is the creation of Rebecca Board who has discretely tucked over 400 named daylilies, including many recent introductions, onto her half-acre suburban lot. The daylily beds to the rear of the house are fenced to keep out deer and screened from the street by trees, shrubs and two arbors. Since her husband John refuses to give up all the lawn and small sons Anthony and Christopher need a play space, Rebecca has placed most of the daylily beds along the sides of the yard in the back except for two island beds, one near the pergola with the children's swing and the other near the deck of the house.

Integrated into the garden are heuchera, canna, hosta, iris, and small flowering shrubs and trees. A few garden art objects accent the daylily beds. Cyberlily Gardens is a small garden but has plenty of daylilies to enjoy. There is a mix of diploids and tetraploids as well a variety of forms.

Rebecca plants most of the daylilies she will be using for hybridizing close to the back door to save time in the mornings, so the bed nearest the house by the fence is referred to as the hybridizing bed. It has many recent introductions such as PAUL SAINS PRIZE, GREEN MYSTIQUE, ANDY CANDY, PALACE GARDEN BEAUTY, SUPREME EMPIRE, LAKE EFFECT, MILDRED MITCHELL, SEISMIC FORCE, LAVENDER BLUE BABY and MALACHITE PRIZM, as well as some of her old favorites like BLUE VENTURE and OMOMUKI.

The round bed near the deck contains seedlings under evaluation. Most are from Rebecca's program but a few are from other hybridizers. Rebecca's introductions and a few of her pre-registered future introductions, including CYBERLILY MAGIC BUTTERFLY, are in this bed.

By the pergola a large pot showcases several miniature daylilies, both old and new, by bringing them closer to eye level. The beds nearest the pergola contain several guest plants: CAST A SPELL, BROADWAY DAZZLER, SANFORD TOAD HALL, A BAUBLE FOR BILBO, POINT OF HONOR, and GEORGE JETS ON. These beds also have some daylilies garden judges shouldn't miss including SKINWALKER, CRYSTAL BLUE PERSUASION, JELLYFISH JEALOUSY, FORSYTH COMANCHE, MISS DOROTHY, MAPPING CAROLINA, CULTURE SHOCK, and GIZMO.

The far borders of the garden include many classic daylilies as well as newer things and wonderful but perhaps less well-known daylilies. Spring arrivals will be quarantined on the deck, so be sure to see if any are in bloom.

Rebecca Board is an AHS Garden Judge, a Junior Exhibition Judge, and a hybridizer, having registered her first introduction in 2002. Rebecca specializes hybridizing for complex eye eyezones as well as other unusual color patterns.
