| Daylily Meet Suggestions | | Hello Hemaholics,
I can't believe another year has passed. Moving on to 2009, although there are a couple meetings that usually do not have speakers as the primary agenda, the rest of the meetings focus on daylilies and gardening and are open to subjects, ideas, and speakers, both local and from around the country, that can cover a wide scope of topics. Most importantly, though, we always hope to have subjects and information in our meetings that is interesting and fun, so that all members really want to attend each meeting, and not miss any of those opportunities..
As David enters this planning and scheduling time for our club meetings for next year, getting ideas and feedback from club members is exceedingly valuable for planning meeting speakers and subjects. This feedback gives the VP a better perspective, as it can come from people that have been around daylilys for a while, and as importantly those that are new to daylilies and gardening, and are looking for the information and experience that some of us may already have..
What all this is saying is, we would like to have your thoughts on what would be interesting to you in 2009 and on? The club and the meetings are there for all of us to participate in and enjoy. Speaking from the experience, as programs are being put together, the VP is working hard to come up with subjects, ideas, and speakers that will make our meetings interesting. Getting this kind of feedback is always valuable in helping to create interesting agendas for the current year, as well as follow on years, so please share your thoughts with David at his email address ddekort01@hotmail.com Thanks..

| Garden Tip of the Month | | Keeping Deer At Bay
This time of year deer don't have many options for their diet. A herd of deer can eat a garden to the ground in one evening. I have used nearly every product to deter these beasts. I have found my own recipe to work the best, for at least the deer around here.
Dave's Deer Repellent.
1/4 cup of ground Curry Powder
1.4 cup of crushed garlic
Leaf sticker (surfactant to help stick to the plants)
1 tsp of Cayenne Pepper
1/8 cup of Lime Sulfur (sulfur powder can be used as a substitute).
Add the Curry, Garlic and Cayenne pepper to a pot of boiling water. Allow to boil for a few minutes. Strain out all the particulates and keep the liquid. Add liquid to sprayer. Add lime sulfur, leaf sticker to mixture and fill with water. Spray on plants. It will not hurt any plant I have sprayed on. It usually last for three weeks and last two weeks with rain.
It has worked for me. Please let me know if you use this and what your results were.
Using a nylon black fence also helps. It can be purchased at Lowes and Home Depot. I use fence posts to take the nylon fence in place. Both are very cheap ways to deal with deer. Good Luck

July 14th Meeting |
 |
Guest Speaker Joe and Ginger Goudeau
For our July meeting, on Tuesday, 7/14/2009 we have Joe and Ginger Goudeau from Baton Rouge Louisiana. Doors open at 6:45, with the meeting starting at 7:15. Joe and Ginger's garden, "Daylilies Etc." is another creative corner in the section of the country that was one of the early hotbeds of daylily hybridizing. The area brought us some of the early well known hybridizers like Mr. MacMillan, the Spaldings, Mrs Guidry, and later Clarence Crochet, who is Joe & Ginger's mentor. Joe and Ginger are the younger generation that is carrying on the creative hybridizing tradition in Cajun Country.
And did I say Clarence was Joe's Mentor? Anyone that knows Clarence, and has heard him speak, know that not only will he entertain and educate you with his flowers and daylilies in general, but he will also not touch your funny bone but give it a really good whack with his Boudreaux and Thibodeaux jokes. Well, Joe picks up where Clarence left off. Obviously, Boudreaux and Thibodeaux are from WAY south of Benson, and our favorite town, Fuquay-Varina. Joe and Gingers mix of beautiful daylilies and Louisiana Blackwater Cajun humor will be more entertainment and fun than then the proverbial law allows, for a daylily meeting anyway. You really don't want to miss this informative and fun evening. Come on out to give Joe and Ginger a real up south southern welcome
David
